How to Install a WOFF Font on Windows

How to Install a WOFF Font on Windows

You found a font you love, but it is a WOFF or WOFF2 file. You right-click it and there is no Install option. You drag it into the Fonts folder and Windows refuses. This guide shows you how to install a WOFF font on Windows 10 and 11, the right way, and how to fix the errors people run into.

Why Windows will not install WOFF fonts

Windows installs desktop font formats, mostly TTF (TrueType) and OTF (OpenType). WOFF and WOFF2 are web formats. They contain the same kind of font data, but compressed and wrapped for websites. Windows does not unwrap them.

So installing a WOFF font takes two steps:

  1. Convert the WOFF to TTF or OTF.
  2. Install the TTF or OTF.

The conversion does not change the font. It only removes the web packing. If you want to know more about the format, see what a WOFF file is.

Step 1: Check the font first

Before you install anything, open the font in the free WOFF viewer. It takes ten seconds and saves you from installing a font you cannot use.

  • Type your text in the preview. Boxes mean missing characters.
  • Check the Style in Font information. Is it Regular, Bold or something else?
  • Read the License. Some web fonts are not licensed for desktop use.

If the font is only a small slice of a bigger font, you may prefer to get the full version from its maker. Our guide on why WOFF fonts show boxes explains how web fonts get cut down.

Step 2: Convert WOFF to TTF

  1. In the viewer, with your font open, click “Convert & download”.
  2. The button says .ttf or .otf. The tool picks the right format for your font.
  3. The file saves to your Downloads folder.

This works for both WOFF and WOFF2. The file is converted in your browser and never uploaded. Full details are in how to convert WOFF to TTF.

Try it: Convert your WOFF font to TTF, then install it in one click.

Step 3: Install the TTF on Windows

You have three ways to install. Use whichever is easiest.

Option A: Right-click and Install

  1. Open your Downloads folder in File Explorer.
  2. Right-click the TTF or OTF file.
  3. On Windows 11, click “Show more options” if you do not see Install.
  4. Click Install to add the font for your account only.
  5. Or click Install for all users to add it for everyone. This needs admin rights.

Option B: Double-click and Install

  1. Double-click the TTF file.
  2. Windows Font Viewer opens with a preview.
  3. Click the Install button at the top.

Option C: Drag into Settings

  1. Open Settings, then Personalization, then Fonts.
  2. Drag the TTF or OTF file onto the “Drag and drop to install” area.

This option is handy when you have several files to install at once.

Install for me or for all users?

OptionWhere the font goesAdmin needed?Best for
InstallYour AppData folderNoPersonal use on your own account
Install for all usersC:\Windows\FontsYesShared PCs, some older apps

Most apps see fonts installed either way. A few older programs only look in C:\Windows\Fonts. If an app cannot find your font, try “Install for all users”.

Step 4: Use the font in your apps

Close and reopen the app you want to use the font in. Most apps read the list of fonts only when they start.

Then find the font by its real name, not the file name. The name comes from inside the font. The viewer shows it in the Font family field. If you are unsure, read how to find the font name inside a WOFF2 file.

Installing a whole font family

Web fonts often come as separate files for each style. To get a proper family in Word or Photoshop:

  1. Convert every file: Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic and so on.
  2. Install them all.
  3. Restart your apps.

Now the Bold and Italic buttons will use the real designs. If you only install Regular, Windows fakes bold and italic by thickening and slanting the letters. It looks rough. Our guide on checking the font weight of a WOFF file helps you sort the files.

Common errors and how to fix them

“The file is not a valid font file”

The most common causes:

  • You tried to install the WOFF file itself. Install the converted TTF instead.
  • The file is not really a font. Websites sometimes send an error page that gets saved as .woff. Open it in Notepad. A real WOFF starts with wOFF, and a real WOFF2 starts with wOF2.
  • The font was cut down too far. Some web tools strip parts of the font that Windows expects. Try getting the font from another source.

“Font is already installed”

Windows found a font with the same name. Either it is already installed, or another font uses the same name. If you are replacing an old version, uninstall it first, then install the new one.

The font does not appear in Word or PowerPoint

  1. Close all Office windows completely and reopen.
  2. Type the family name in the font box instead of scrolling.
  3. If it still does not show, reinstall with “Install for all users”.

The font looks different from the website

Websites can adjust spacing and size with CSS. The installed font shows its default look. Also check that you installed the right weight. A Light font will look thinner than the Regular you saw online.

Some letters show as boxes

The font lacks those characters. This is common with web fonts. See can’t open a WOFF font and the boxes guide for fixes.

Installing fonts on a work computer

Company PCs often have limits. You may see an error, or the Install option may do nothing. Here is what usually helps:

  • Use plain Install, not Install for all users. Per-user installs do not need admin rights on most setups.
  • Ask your IT team. Some companies block font installs for security or licensing reasons. They may install the font for you if the license allows it.
  • Check the license for business use. A font that is free for personal use may need a paid license at work.

When a font still does not show up

Windows keeps a font cache to speed things up. Once in a while, the cache holds on to old information and a new font does not appear, or an old version keeps showing.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Restart the app.
  2. Sign out of Windows and sign back in.
  3. Restart the PC.

A full restart clears most font cache problems. If a font still misbehaves after that, uninstall it, restart, and install it again.

Keep your font list clean

Every installed font shows up in every font menu. After a while, menus become long and slow to scroll. Install only the fonts you will use, and uninstall ones you tried and did not like. Keep your converted TTF files in a folder like Documents\Fonts, so you can reinstall them later without converting again.

How to uninstall the font

  1. Open Settings, then Personalization, then Fonts.
  2. Search for the font name.
  3. Click it, then click Uninstall.

Close any app that is using the font first, or Windows may not be able to remove it.

A note on WOFF2 fonts

Everything above works for WOFF2 files too. The only difference is the first step. The viewer needs a moment to load its WOFF2 reader the first time. For more WOFF2 help on Windows, read how to open WOFF2 files on Windows.

Is it legal to install a web font?

It depends on the license. Fonts under open licenses, like the SIL Open Font License, can be installed and used freely. Many commercial web fonts are licensed only for use on a specific website. Installing them on your computer may break that license. Always check the License field in the viewer, and when in doubt, contact the font maker.

Common questions

Can Windows 11 install WOFF fonts?

No. Windows 11 installs TTF and OTF fonts only. Convert WOFF files first.

Will the converted font work in Photoshop?

Yes. Once installed, it appears in Photoshop’s font list like any other font.

Can I install the font on several PCs?

Technically, yes. Copy the TTF to each PC and install it. Whether you are allowed to depends on the license. Many commercial licenses limit the number of computers.

Do I need special software?

No. A browser and Windows are enough. The converter is free and runs in your browser.

Is the converted TTF lower quality?

No. It has the same letters, spacing and names as the WOFF.

Summary

Windows cannot install WOFF or WOFF2 files directly. Open the font in a free WOFF viewer, check its characters and license, click “Convert & download” to get a TTF, then right-click the TTF and choose Install. Install every style for a proper family, and restart your apps to see it.
