How to Convert WOFF to TTF

How to Convert WOFF to TTF

You have a WOFF font and want to use it in Word, Photoshop or Canva. Your computer will not install it, because it only accepts TTF and OTF fonts. The fix is to convert WOFF to TTF. This guide shows you how to do it in seconds, for free, without uploading your font anywhere.

Why you need to convert WOFF to TTF

WOFF is a web font format. Websites use it because it is small and loads fast. Inside, a WOFF file holds normal font data, the same kind you find in a TTF file. It is just compressed and wrapped for the web.

Desktop systems do not unwrap it. Windows and macOS install TTF and OTF fonts, not WOFF. So to use a web font on your computer, you need to unpack it back into a TTF.

The good news: this is not a lossy conversion. Nothing is redrawn or rebuilt. The tool unpacks the same data that went in when the WOFF was made. You get the exact same font. If you want the background on the format, read what a WOFF file is.

The fastest way: convert WOFF to TTF in your browser

Our free WOFF to TTF converter works right in your browser. Your font is not uploaded.

  1. Go to openwofffile.com.
  2. Drop your WOFF file on the pink box, or click “Choose font file”.
  3. Check the preview to make sure it is the font you want.
  4. Click “Convert & download .ttf”.
  5. The TTF file lands in your Downloads folder.

That is it. The whole process takes a few seconds, even for large fonts.

Try it: Convert your WOFF file to TTF now. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

TTF or OTF: which will you get?

Some WOFF files hold TrueType outlines. Others hold PostScript outlines, also called CFF. The converter checks which one your font uses.

  • TrueType outlines become a .ttf file.
  • PostScript (CFF) outlines become an .otf file.

The button tells you which one you will get before you click. You cannot turn one into the other without redrawing the curves, and there is no need to. Windows and macOS install both TTF and OTF fonts the same way. The Font information panel in the viewer shows the outline type if you are curious.

How to install the TTF

On Windows 10 and 11

  1. Open your Downloads folder.
  2. Right-click the TTF file.
  3. Choose “Install” for just your account, or “Install for all users”.
  4. Restart the app you want to use it in.

On Windows 11, if you do not see Install, click “Show more options” first. Full details are in how to install a WOFF font on Windows.

On Mac

  1. Double-click the TTF file.
  2. Font Book opens and shows a preview.
  3. Click Install.

Font Book may warn you about small issues in the font. Most web fonts install fine anyway. For more Mac tips, see how to open WOFF fonts on a Mac.

What stays the same after converting

People often worry that conversion changes the font. Here is what stays exactly the same:

Part of the fontAfter converting to TTF
Letter shapesIdentical
Spacing and kerningIdentical
Font name and styleIdentical
Character setIdentical
HintingIdentical
License textIdentical

The only thing that changes is the file size. A TTF is usually larger than the WOFF, because it is no longer compressed. A 70 KB WOFF might become a 150 KB TTF. That is normal and does not matter on your computer.

Converting WOFF2 to TTF

WOFF2 is the newer, smaller version of WOFF. The steps are the same. Drop the WOFF2 file into the converter and click the Convert button. Behind the scenes, WOFF2 is more complex to unpack, because it rebuilds some parts of the font. The result still has the same shapes, spacing and characters. Our guide on converting WOFF2 to TTF explains the difference.

Other ways to convert WOFF to TTF

fontTools (for developers)

If you have Python, fontTools can convert fonts from the command line. It is handy for converting a whole folder at once.

pip install fonttools brotli
python -c "from fontTools.ttLib import TTFont; f=TTFont('font.woff'); f.flavor=None; f.save('font.ttf')"

Setting flavor to None saves the font without WOFF packing, which gives you a plain TTF or OTF.

FontForge

FontForge is a free font editor. Open the WOFF file, then choose File, Generate Fonts, and pick TrueType. This works well if you also want to change something in the font. See how to edit a WOFF file.

Online converters that upload your file

Many websites convert fonts on their server. They work, but your font leaves your computer. For paid, private or client fonts, that can be a problem. A browser-based tool keeps the file on your device.

Check the font before you convert

A few quick checks in the viewer save you from installing a font you cannot use.

  1. Type your real text in the preview. If you see boxes, the font lacks some characters.
  2. Look at the glyph count. Web fonts are often cut down to one language. A low count may mean it is only part of the font.
  3. Read the license. Some fonts may only be used on the website that bought them.

If you see boxes, read why WOFF fonts show boxes before you go further. Converting does not add missing characters.

Troubleshooting

Windows says “not a valid font file”

This can happen for a few reasons:

  • You tried to install the WOFF file instead of the converted TTF.
  • The download was cut short, so the file is damaged.
  • The web font was cut down so hard that important parts were removed.

Try converting again from a fresh download. If it still fails, the source file is likely the problem. Our guide on fixes for WOFF fonts that will not open covers more cases.

The font installs but has the wrong name in Word

The name comes from inside the font, not from the file name. Renaming the TTF file does not change it. See how to find the font name inside a WOFF2 file to see what the font calls itself.

The Convert button does not appear

The button only shows for WOFF and WOFF2 files. If you open a TTF or OTF, there is nothing to convert. If you opened a WOFF and still do not see it, update your browser. The converter needs a modern browser.

The converted font looks different

It should not. If the letters look lighter or heavier in your app, you may have converted a different weight than you expected. Check the Style field in the viewer. Our guide on checking the font weight of a WOFF file can help.

When you do not need to convert

Converting is only needed when you want to install the font on your computer. You can skip it in these cases:

  • You only want to see the font. The viewer shows the preview, details and glyphs without converting.
  • You want to use it on a website. Browsers read WOFF and WOFF2 directly. Keep the web format, because it is smaller.
  • You want to know its name. Read it in the Font information panel. Then you may be able to download the full desktop version from the maker.

That last point is worth a moment. If the font turns out to be free, like most Google Fonts, the official download gives you a complete TTF with every character and weight. That is often better than converting a web slice.

Converting a whole family

Websites often load four or more files from one family: Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, for example. Convert each file one by one in the viewer. Check the Style field each time so you know which is which. Then install all of them together. Apps will group them into one family, and the Bold and Italic buttons in Word will work properly.

Is it legal to convert WOFF to TTF?

Converting the format is a technical step. Whether you may use the result depends on the license. Fonts under the SIL Open Font License or Apache License are free to use and convert. Commercial web fonts often come with a web-only license. Converting them for desktop use may break that license. When in doubt, check the license field or contact the font maker.

Common questions

Is converting WOFF to TTF free?

Yes. Our converter is free with no sign-up and no limit on the number of files.

Does conversion lower the quality?

No. WOFF compression is lossless. Unpacking it gives back the exact font data.

Can I convert TTF back to WOFF?

Yes. Tools like fontTools can pack a TTF into WOFF or WOFF2 for use on a website.

Can I convert on my phone?

Yes. The converter works in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. You can save the TTF to your Files app. You cannot install fonts system-wide on a phone, but you can send the file to your computer.

Summary

To convert WOFF to TTF, drop the file into a browser-based converter, click “Convert & download”, and install the TTF. The font stays exactly the same, and with a browser tool it never leaves your device. Check the characters and the license before you install, and you are good to go.
